The SDE++ scheme (Stimulation of Sustainable Energy Transition) is intended for companies and non-profit organisations investing in installations for renewable energy production or CO₂ reduction.

Through this scheme, the government supports cost-effective projects that make a substantial contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The SDE++ compensates the difference between the cost of renewable energy or CO₂ reduction and the market value of the energy produced or emissions avoided.
If, for example, the cost of a technology exceeds the revenue generated from the energy produced, the difference can be compensated through the SDE++.
The subsidy is granted for a period of 12 to 15 years, depending on the technology applied.
Within the SDE++, various technologies and categories are opened that contribute to CO₂ emission reduction. Projects are assessed based on cost-effectiveness (CO₂ reduction per euro of subsidy).
The application rounds typically take place in multiple phases. In the early phases, projects with the lowest subsidy intensity can apply, while in later phases, projects with higher costs are eligible.
An important condition is that the project must not have started the realisation of the installation at the time of application.
